Taking a child with acute (aml) leukemia waiting for bone marrow transplant to a ball game?

The kid is home from the hospital after a first round of chemo, and mom is taking him around to ball games, etc. She says that it’s fine as long as he wears his mask and doesn’t get *too* close to the other kids – after all, he’s in remission. It scares me for the kid, though, as I am afraid that this mom is just giving in to a bored, sick child. I was under the impression that a kid with leukemia who has only been out of the hospital for a few days had no immune system and shouldn’t be taken a football game or out to the mall for ANY reason, mask or not.

Is this dangerous? Is this something that I should try to report to social services or something? The mama is sort-of my friend, but I don’t want that boy’s death on my conscience, either!

Hi – I have leukemia. You could not be more correct! This mom is not thinking! This child should not be out. Do whatever you can – talk to your mom, the mom, and if need be the hospital. This child can get sick so easily. The mother needs a real education. It is great that you are smart enough to know this and care. Good for you.
